Tribute to Martin Luther King

He is the first person in the Western world to have shown us that a struggle can be waged without violence. He is the first to make the message of brotherly love a reality in the course of his struggle, and he has brought this message to all men, to all nations and races.

Today we pay tribute to Martin Luther King, the man who has never abandoned his faith in the unarmed struggle he is waging, who has suffered for his faith, who has been imprisoned on many occasions, whose home has been subject to bomb attacks, whose life and the lives of his family have been threatened, and who nevertheless has never faltered.

To this undaunted champion of peace the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament has awarded the Peace Prize for the year 1964.

Change for a New Career Scene in 2013

A mentor of mine reminded me how important it was to "shake" things up periodically. It loosened our creative juices, helped us gain a new perspective, and prepared us for change. Hence, my advice to you is: "Shake" things up at this new year time. Pick up an instrument. Make a new career friend. Take a hike or walk on the beach. Or, just take a "different" route to your destination. My mentor used to take a different route to work almost every day. This will help clear any cob webs you have. Then, see what rises to the surface for the next step that you will set for your career.

Enjoy!  Marianne           As always, you may reach me @

WISHING YOU THE BEST IN 2013!!!

Over the years, I am continually amazed by the unique strengths, experience and skills each person holds. It’s rewarding working with each client to brand those unique areas for career growth, in order to land the next job, or for creation of the most effective resume. This year, may you all continue to reap the rewards of leveraging your uniqueness in your career.

With that in mind, I'm sharing two valuable career resources with you. These may be instrumental in adding to your self-knowledge for career enhancement, development or re-direction. First there is, the Jungian Typology: http://humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes1.htm
Also, there is one of my favorite books:  StrengthsFinder 2.0.  This book offers an online assessment access with the book, along with excellent descriptions of your top 5 natural talents.

Both of these resources will assist you in leveraging your uniqueness this year. Enjoy the process!

All the best,
Marianne

NEW YEAR'S CAREER ADVICE: Take a Step Towards Your Interests & Passion!

This holiday a dear friend gave me the most beautiful silver necklace. It holds a helix strand with the following words by Rumi: "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do." This comes at at time when this friend and I have been moving towards new areas in our career lives. Our entire lives are being powerfully affected. We talk about how frightening taking these steps can be for us. Recently, I heard that the fear we sometimes feel before we lead an important meeting, give a talk, or make a speech is really excitement. We have an underlying anticipation of what is to come. When we get in touch with those feelings, we are able to be more powerful and centered as we speak.

I think the same is true for some of the moves we make in our career. We all know that fear of taking a next step or new direction. What if we now thought of that feeling of being scarred or nervous as a sign of anticipation and excitement. Then, we could try to leverage that energy to move us forward.
So, this year look upon your career movement as positive and build momentum around it. Always pay attention to your instincts, stay true to who you are, and seek out people for support and guidance. In 2013, you might find that you have some exciting results when you take a step, even if it's scary, towards your interests & passion!

I wish you a great start to 2013!    Marianne       marianne@designyourdirection.com
